What is ISKCON Prison Ministry?

ISKCON Prison Ministry (IPM) has been tending to the spiritual needs of inmates all over the states for over 30 years.

Volunteers of the ISKCON Prison Ministry daily correspond with hundreds of inmates all over the States and other countries and send them devotional material; Prabhupada's books, Back To Godhead magazines, DVDs, music and lectures CDs, pictures, as well as japa and neck beads. Hundreds of inmates take up the chanting of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra and many become life-long, dedicated devotees of the Lord. Some inmates even take initiation, sometimes while still in prison.

The mission of IPM is to spread Lord Caitanya's mercy to the fallen souls of Kali-yuga who find themselves within a prison of the prison house of the material world.

IPM believes that the only cure for society's ills, both for individual person and as a whole, is the process of bhakti-yoga. By reading Srila Prabhupada's books, following the four regulations, abstinence from meat-eating, gambling, intoxication, and illicit sex, and by chanting the maha mantra, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, even a criminal can become a perfect citizen.

"The means which I have adopted is spiritual and it works quicker than any material means. If you give me chance to speak to all the members in jail, it is quite possible for me to turn them into ideal characters."
Srila Prabhupada, Letter to Sri Puri, 1962

“Please know that the work you are doing is so very significant. It can make a life changing difference in a prisoner’s life. These teachings are so powerful; just reading this material seems to elevate my consciousness. How much more so, practicing and applying the principles? I am so grateful that you folks are still able to help.
I have been reading the Gita constantly and chanting several rounds a day. I have already experienced a significant shift in consciousness. It is incredible how much difference chanting and studying makes. I feel very fortunate that God is showing me this mercy; I am undeserving of such blessing. I do want to thank you once again for the work you are doing and for the precious gifts that you send. Your gifts are treasured.”

“I would like to say thank you for everything that you have helped me with. I appreciate it so very much, and thank you for showing me the way to our sweet Lord Krsna. Thank you for the recent Back to Godhead magazine; I enjoyed every article in it. I also appreciate the books you sent; they sure have helped me in my spiritual life. The Gita is my favorite; I’ve already read it cover to cover three times and I’ve just started it for the fourth time. All I do with my time is read and chant; I rarely watch any T.V. It’s all garbage on the screen.”
